Farewell, My Friend
A Step-by-Step Guide to Handling a Serious Illness and Even the Death of a Loved One
Beatrice Toney Bailey
Softbound
$19.95

Bea and James Bailey
When Bea Bailey called to see if I might like to review her book, I could tell just by listening to her that it had to be very, very special indeed. Even over the phone I found myself in the presence of someone so filled with life and in possession of a heart that was wide open that I was inspired. To find such a person is a rare event - rarer still is to find that such a person has made caring for a loved one through serious illness and even death her mission. Her book, the outcome of her journey alongside her beloved husband James as his illness progressed and eventually claimed his life, is a pearl of priceless worth.
Bea has shared with humor, honesty, joy and sorrow all that she learned on this journey, and all that she believes you will need to know should such a passage become part of your own life.
This is the most practical, healing book on the subject I've ever seen. It is as though Bea were standing along side you, say, now you need to attend to this matter; now you need to check on that; are you taking care of yourself? Here's what to do so that you continue to have the strength to help. And more, much more.
Farewell, My Friend is a book you read through tears and through laughter. It is a book that heals the heart as it helps you navigate through the myriad details that will confront you. It is a book about love, right through and then beyond the end of this life. Bea has made of her own loss a gift to all of us. |

Living into Dying is a grace-filled
book. I really can't do any better at describing it than
to share with you the following from the back of the book:
Here is a family who celebrated their elders, nursed
them at home to die, built their caskets, honored
and cared for them after death and then went out
into the community to help others who wanted to do
the same.
"Living into Dying" is a moving
and beautiful book. I am grateful that Nancy has
shared her wisdom and experience. It will benefit
both present and future generations. Death is a sacred
passage, and Nancy's work teaches us to approach
it with reverence, respect, and naturalness.
"The stories are awe-inspiring, the practical
advice is invaluable, and the explorations of spiritual
meaning give depth and richness. Living into
Dying will serve as a true guidebook for all
those who celebrate life, community and human striving
for what is good and right."
- Rev. April Herron-Sweet
United Methodist Pastor
"Every aspect of caring for the
dying is in this book, from "building a casket" to "connecting
with those who have died."

Working with the
Dead
Volume 2 of The Little Series

Writings of Rudolf Steiner
by Helmut von Kügelgen
Translated with permission of the authors estate by
the Waldorf Early Childhood Association of North America
(WECAN)
$15.00

This is a beautiful book and a fitting companion to Volume 1
(Spiritual Insights) of WECAN's Little Series. Joan Almon's
Preface to Working with the Dead really says it all:
Since the following passages were written, Helmut von
Kügelgen crossed the threshold of death. On 25 February,
1998, at age 81, he experienced his birth into
the spirit lands he loved so dearly. Less than
a year before, at the
Whitsun kindergarten conference, he spoke to
us with passion ringing in his voice and said, "The
spirit is not over there. It is here!" During those
days he shared this realization with us several
times. He spoke in the
spirit of the Gospels which say, "Look not for the
realm of the spirit outside yourselves, for it
is among you." But he also spoke as if the veil which
usually separates the spiritual world from the
earthly had grown
thin and translucent for him. The spiritual was
now ever-present for him. Over the years we had
watched his body grow frailer
while his spirit grew stronger. he had prepared
himself well for his journey into the spiritual
world.
This booklet, along with the others he so lovingly compiled
in the "Little Series," is being made available
to the English speaking world both in memory of his service
on the earth and in recognition of his continued activity
in the spiritual worlds. The work such a soul performs
on behalf of humanity does not come to an end with so-called
death. It continues on, and we are privileged to work with
him - and with the legions of others who are active on
the other side of the threshold. We can be grateful that
in this booklet Helmut von Kügelgen compiled such
riches from the work of Rudolf Steiner to show us the way
to work with those who have died to the earth but who are
born into the spiritual.
Joan Almon
Easter, 2000
I would like to add that Helmut von Kügelgen
gathered these excerpts specifically with the work of the
Waldorf teacher in mind. He included a personal letter to
teachers, mothers, fathers and colleagues in the kindergarten
by way of introducing the pedagogical intent of Working
with the Dead.

The Influence of the Dead on Destiny
Rudolf Steiner
Softbound
$25.00
|
 |

|
Naturally, the dead do not know the physical, mineral world. Theirs is, above all, a world filled with feeling. For them, the lowest world is the ‘animal’ world—the world of feeling, of joy and pain, of interpenetrating relationships, sympathy and antipathy, and compassion. For this reason, the dead play directly into the animal world of Earth, which for earthly humans is mostly destructive. But purifying themselves of destructive animal impulses, the dead transform this world and learn, above all, reverence for life—for all life. They learn to hold every living thing sacred and holy.
—Christopher Bamford (from the introduction)
With a single observation, Rudolf Steiner can sometimes outline a radically new reality that changes everything. Here, he introduces these extraordinary lectures by proposing that the boundary between the physical and spiritual worlds “lies right in the middle of the human being.”
One indication of this boundary may be found in what science mistakenly differentiates as the sensory and motor nerves, which for Steiner, do not represent two kinds of nerve functions, but rather a gap, or interruption, through which soul, spiritual reality incarnates, and through which the spiritual world participates in the natural, physical world. This gap allows us to experience inwardly and take part in not only the outer world, but also in the spiritual world and the world of those who have died. It also functions as the boundary between the conscious and subconscious.
The lectures that loosely follow this introduction go into the vast field of the dead and the spiritual worlds and the many ways that these influence and become involved in human and earthly life. Steiner shows how the living and the dead (along with the whole spiritual world) are intimately interrelated. History itself is the result of this interweaving activity, whose influences “flow right into our daily lives.” Realizing “this feeling of being together with the dead” is essential for human development.
The reader’s understanding of the influence of those who have died on human destiny deepens with each lecture, as Steiner shows how this reality becomes existential—a matter of personal decision—through the Archangel Michael’s great action in 1979, when he assumed responsibility for the guidance of humankind.
Thus, together with Michael and the whole spiritual world, those who have died call upon us to change our consciousness.
The Influence of the Dead on Destiny is the first complete English translation from the German of Geistige Wesen und Ihre Wirkung Geschichtliche Notwendigkeit und Freiheit. Schicksalseinwirkungen aus der Welt der Toten. Band III (GA 179).

Use this book as an encouragement to take a new step
on your journey into the sphere of the spirit—the
soul’s true home. Your friends who are already
there will help you.
— Russell Evans, author of Helping
Children to Overcome Fear
What happens to us after death? What paths open up?
How do we stay connected or even help our loved ones
who have died? Answers to these questions can be found
in Eastern religions, but surprisingly also in the Christian
tradition! In fact, such answers were prevalent in original
Christianity, but were gradully ignored by the Church
and lost.
With the help of “near-death” experiences,
understanding of biblical texts, and Christ’s activity
in life after death, the reader’s attention is
focused again on the views of this esoteric Christianity.
The authors ask:
- What are the seven steps into Light?
- What are the tasks and gifts of each step?
- How does Christ’s love sustain the dead as
they experience the previous life and prepare for the
next?
- What uplifting insights are offered by the Bible,
Dead Sea Scrolls, and Gnostic texts?
- How can the living help or hinder the dead?
- How do loved ones try to help you?
- Why is the love and wisdom gained in life so important?
- This is an invaluable guide to understanding the
Christian view of what happens after death and how
to stay connected with our loved ones who have died.

Crossing the
Threshold
Practical and Spiritual Guidance on Death and Dying
Based on the Work of Rudolf Steiner
Nicholas Wijnberg
and Philip Martyn
Softbound
$13.00

 |

|
|
When faced with the prospect of death—our own
or someone else’s—there is often little time
to prepare. This book presents a wealth of practical
and spiritual guidance on all aspects of death and dying.
Writing from the perspective of Rudolf Steiner’s
spiritual philosophy, the authors suggest ways of coping
with the time leading up to death and also the period
afterwards. They examine different circumstances of death
and offer advice on practical questions such as the arrangement
of funerals, laying out of the body, legal requirements
and wills. They also suggest how those who remain on
earth can continue to relate to the departed souls of
the deceased.

A Rainbow over
the River
Experiences of life, death and other worlds
Veronika van Duin
Softbound
$17.95
|
 |

|
|
For many years Veronika van Duin has been able to see “over
the river” experiencing spiritual dimensions and
worlds hidden to the physical eye. With clairvoyant vision
she has perceived angels and demonic beings, people who
have died, and even events taking place in other parts
of the world. But in 2002, with the passing of her mother
Barbara Lipsker, the author’s spiritual journeys
became more concentrated and frequent, and she began
to see people who had recently crossed the threshold
of death, including the victims of an airplane disaster
and a suicide bombing.
In A Rainbow Over the River, the author tells her remarkable
story, from her earliest glimpses of the other side to
her most recent excursions “over the river.” In
the second part of the book, she records an intensely
moving diary of her mother’s passing, rich in love,
care, and profound understanding of suffering. She describes
how, despite the sadness of losing their mother, Veronika’s
family see the death as a transition to a new existence
and, ultimately, as a great festival of life. In the
third section of the book she speaks of her mother’s
life as a pioneer of Camphill, a social movement that
provides home and work for people with special needs.
She also offers thoughts on birth and death, grief, healing,
prayer, and the meaning of existence.
A Rainbow Over the River is a glorious celebration of
life, illumined through a knowledge of death and the
eternal nature of spirit.
Veronika van Duin is also the author of Homemaking
as a Social Art.

Living with the
Dead
Meditations for maintaining a connection to those
who have died
Rudolf Steiner
Hardbound, dust jacket, pocket format
$19.95
|
 |

|
|
In this collection of meditations for maintaining a connection
to those who have died, Rudolf Steiner offers hope and consolation
to the bereaved. He offers words of wisdom on death and its deeper,
spiritual meaning, and then provides verses that stress the continued
links between the living and the dead. He shows how our thoughts can
help those who have departed earthly life. Finally, he includes poems
that express something of what those who have died experience in their
new existence.
As a spiritual teacher Rudolf Steiner wrote many beautifully
formed and inspired verses. Often they were given in
relation to specific situations or in response to individual
requests; sometimes they were created for general use
in assisting the process of meditation. Regardless of
their origins, they are uniformly powerful in their ability
to connect the meditant with spiritual archetypes and
realities, and are valuable tools for developing experience
and knowledge of other dimensions. Matthew Barton has
delicately translated these meditations into English,
many for the first time, and arranged them thematically
in this outstanding new series.

Staying Connected
How to Continue Your Relationships with Those Who Have Died
Selected Talks and Meditations by
Rudolf Steiner
Edited and Introduced by Christopher Bamford
$19.95 |
 |
|
|
"Working with the dead" - maintaining, continuing, and enhancing our
relationships with those who have died - was fundamental to Rudolf Steiner, as
it is to every spiritual tradition. So, too, is the idea that human beings on
both sides of the threshold constitute a single community. This book provides
concrete, practical instructions for those who wish to engage consciously in
the great work that the living and the so-called dead can do together.
Steiner speaks directly from experience, formulating
meditation practices and verses that have worked
for him. We learn of reading to the dead and of
using verbs (not nouns) to communicate with them.
We learn also about the importance of the sacred
moments of falling asleep and awaking and of the
way in which our memories are like "art" to
them. Finally, we learn of the key soul moods to
be cultivated: community with the world, gratitude,
and confidence in the current of life.
Gradually, we come to realize that the dead, and indeed the whole spiritual
world, care deeply about every aspect of earthly life. We understand
that the earth is the only place where death can be experienced, as well
as the only place where we can love and form connections and relationships.
We learn, too, how this love extends beyond the physical world and how
the living and the dead can help each other.
I have personally used many of the practices discussed
in this volume, always with richly rewarding results.
I unhesitatingly recommend this book to anyone
seeking to connect to people across the threshold
of death.

The Near-Death Experience
Calvert Roszell
With an Introductin by George G. Ritchie
Softbound
$10.95 |
 |

|
|
Near-death experiences (NDE) are among the most
thought-provoking mysteries of human life, and
fully understanding them will have far-reaching
consequences. Are these experiences the hallucinations
of a brain depleted of oxygen, or are they a reconnaissance
into spiritual worlds?
This book explores the research of Dr. Michael
Sabom, a noted cardiologist and professor of medicine
at Emory University, which indicates that near-death
experiences re body-free or spiritual experiences.
It also explores the parallels that exist between
teh work of Rudolf Steiner and descriptions such
as those given by George Ritchie, whose near-death
journey caused Raymond Moody to begin the epoch-making
study that brought the phenomenon into the public
eye.

The Bridge over the River
After Death Communications of a Young Artist
Who Died in World War I
Joseph Wetzl
Softbound
$15.95
|
 |

|
|
This book contains amazing communications from a young musician named
Sigwart to his sister after his death in 1915. At first, she experienced
Sigwart's attempts to reach her as a kind of inner unrest. This eventually
led to the feeling that her brother was trying to contact her. Gradually,
as she lived with this feeling, she was able to achieve conscious contact
with her brother. In this state, she received many remarkable messages,
some of which are gathered here.
In the past decades, there have been many "communications" from
the other side. What distinguishes the messages
in this book is not only the inherent interest
of what they have to say, but the fact that they
were authenticated by Rudolf Steiner. Sigwart's
sister has described her meeting with Rudolf Steiner: "For
an hour and three quarters he scrutinized page
after page. . . . Many times he nodded and exclaimed
approvingly, 'Very well described! Well expressed!
Characterized exactly. . . .' I waited in vain
for the negation of any messages. But none came.
As a parting word, Dr. Steiner said, 'Yes, these
are exceptionally clear, absolutely authentic communications
from the spiritual world. I see no reason for dissuading
you from listening to them further.'
The Bridge over the River is a profound
and inspiring document. Containing prayers, meditations,
insights, advice, and a view of the world born
aloft by love, it will comfort, enlighten, and
speak to hearts of all persuasions.

The selected lectures in this volume are nothing less than
a tour de force of Rudolf Steiner's articulation of
the reality of reincarnation and karma in the modern world.
If you only read one volume of Steiner on reincarnation and
karma, we believe this is the volume you should select. There
is no other place to gain such a comprehensive overview of
what Rudolf Steiner saw when he looked into the reality of
repeated lives and the balancing influences of destiny. As
a bonus, René Querido wrote an excellent introduction
which should help newcomers orient themselves to the concepts
Steiner presents.

An Exercise for Karmic Insight
Rudolf Steiner
Originally published as part of Karmic Relationships, Vol. 2
Softbound
$6.00
|
 |

|
|
There is the possibility of a comparatively quick maturing of insight into karmic
relationships if, for a considerable time, we try patiently and with inner energy to
picture, with greater and greater consciousness, an experience that would otherwise
simply take its course without being grasped properly and fade away in the course of
life.
Rudolf Steiner
In this unique lecture, Steiner presents an exercise one can practice for a better
understanding of karma. He suggests using e the image of a single event in our life
as content for meditation. He offers a detailed description and explains how, over several
days and nights, the image becomes incorporated into our spiritual bodies. Eventually,
the image, in a transformed state, reaches into the physical body, leading one to perceive
a previous earthly life and the cause of the event pictured in meditation.

Reincarnation and Karma
Two Fundamental Truths of Human Existence
Rudolf Steiner
Sorry - Out of Print
|
 |

|
|
Reincarnation and Karma is Steiner's introduction to
the West of these concepts and phenomena. He approaches his
subject from the viewpoint that experiencing the reality of
successive earth lives is the solid foundation upon which
true spiritual knowledge stands. These lectures contain some
of Steiner's most important teachings on reincarnation and
karma:
- How to develop direct perception of the part of our being
that passes through many lives on earth
- How to cultivate the kind of memory necessary for direct
experience of reincarnation
- Thought exercises
- Examples of the working of karma between two incarnations
- How knowledge of reincarnation and karma affects our moral
life
Anyone interested in the questions of human fate and survival
after death will find this book both fascinating and rewarding.

Manifestations of Karma
Eleven Lectures by Rudolf Steiner
$19.95
|
 |

|
|
Manifestations of Karma is probably my favorite of
Steiner's books about the nature of karma and reincarnation.
I suspect that part of my attraction has to do with the fact
that it was one of the first books by Steiner that I read
on the subject, and the very newness of his approach left
an indelible memory tinged with excitement. But there is a
unique aspect of its content that I treasure - namely, it
is here that Steiner lays out a picture of how one
life lays the framework for the next, but that the next life
does not appear (manifest) as a logical, linear, mechanical
outcome of previous incarnations. No, the results of a previous
life's activity and attitudes appears in the next life as
a metamorphosed new creation. It will not look the
same, it will not look like the lifestyle equivalent of Newtons
Third Law. It is much more beautiful, and speaks with much
more depth about the nature of morality and the moral direction
of the Universe. And about growth and development - ours and
the Earth's.

These eleven talks reveal a particular aspect of how humankind
have been guided spiritually throughout historyby the
life forces and astral bodies of the great initiates and avatars
that were preserved, duplicated, and interwoven with the leading
personalities of history. Steiner gives numerous examples
of this process, but he says that such inspired people are
rare today. Nevertheless, we have the possibility of elevating
ourselves in the future to the point where we can receive
into ourselves the "I-being" of the Christ, which
is indeed our greatest goal"not I but Christ in
me."

Reincarnation in Modern Life
Towards a New Christian Awareness
Pietro Archiati
Softbound
$14.95
|
 |

|
|
Reincarnation is usually considered to be an ancient, non-Christian
doctrine originating in the East. Is it compatible with the
teachings of Christianity?
In a lively and fluid style, Pietro Archiati describes the
approach to reincarnation taken by the spiritual master Rudolf
Steiner - an approach which is wholly relevant to Western
consciousness and steeped in true Christianity.
By applying and developing Steiner's ideas, Archiati brings
the concept of reincarnation to bear on many aspects of modern
life, including such vexed issues as abortion and rape. he
addresses the question of whether reincarnation appears in
the New Testament, and explains how we can understand theological
problems such as Christ's Resurrection and the resurrection
of the body from this wider context.

Chalice of Repose
A Contemplative Musician's Approach to Death and Dying
Therese Schroeder-Sheker
VHS Video - approx. 44 minutes
$29.95
|
 |

|
|
The Chalice of Repose Project is the world's only formal education
program in music-thanatology (music for the care of the dying).
Based at St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula, Montana, founder
Therese Schroeder-Sheker and teams of contemplative musician-clinicians
serve the needs of the dying with prescriptive music 365 days
a year. The team focuses on alleviation of both physical and
spiritual pain, mirroring the monks of Cluny who also attended
to ". . . care of the body, and cure of the soul."
With vivid, real life footage, this beautiful film documents
the work and methods of the Chalice of Repose Project, showing
how these dedicated and sensitive musician-clinicians offer
an "annointing of sound" that can help dramatically
alleviate the pain of the dying. I found their work deeply
moving and so inspiring that I only wish my musical skills
were sufficient to enable me to enter this training in music
thanatology and offer this gift of grace to those who are
leaving this world for the next.
If you are a musician, Chalice of Repose offers much
that enobles and extends your art; if you are caring for someone
who is dying, you may find an answer to your deepest wish
for that person; and if you are simply a lover of life, I
think you will find much joy that there are people working
to keep the circle unbroken.

Modern science tells us that we are an insignificant accident
in a vast, indifferent universe. Rudolf Steiner maintains
instead that we are intimately enmeshed with the whole cosmos,
right down to the physical structure of our bodies. In these
talks, he explores our relationship as individuals to the
spiritual cosmos, in which we will all come to live. The key
to being at home in the universe is to understand thesignificance
of our individual, physical lives on earth and what happens
when we leave our physical bodies behind.
Steiner encapsulates his view of our journey after death
and our return to earth and a new life. He describes the "planetary"
spheres through which we each pass and their effects on our
future. He shows us how our character and actions on earth
affect us after we die and how those experiences shape our
next physical life.
This is not merely information to be added to our already
overabundant store of abstract concepts; Steiner gives us
imaginative exercises that help us explore our suprasensory,
or spiritual, human nature. We can begin now to act more consciously
by recognizing the concrete nature of morality and the real
consequences of our present lives.
The introduction and comprehensive afterword by Paul Margulies
explain and contextualize Steiner's text, revealing a message
that is more vital and relevant than ever in our frenzied,
materialistic times. This book can help us experience more
meaning in life and become more at home as spiritual citizens
of the universe.

recalled a previous existence as Anne Frank, author of the

Light Beyond the Darkness:
The Healing of a Suicide Across the Threshold of Death
Doré Deverell
$19.95

I was privileged to be one of the many people who helped
Doré give birth to this incredible story. Doré is an amazingly strong person, someone really capable
of entering into a new understanding of a very painful event, searching
until she found something that would truly heal, and then
doing, and doing, and doing until her love and commitment
metamorphosed into a healing deed that transcended space and
time. This is a story of courage, love, and determination
that has not ceased to inspire me. I hope it adds as much
to your life as it has to mine.

experience after the sudden death of her 13-year-old daugher.
Because of its intimacy and honesty, this little book can

loved relative or friend. It often happens that when we are
confronted by such decisive acts of destiny, there is no one
in our circle of love who can comfort us from their own experience.
And, it is only from the experience of someone who cares that
we can receive comfort and guidance at such a time. Karin
v. Schilling is such a caring person, and her thoughts and
caring can reach out through this little book to anyone in
